River Green Pantry is alive with the smell of coffee. New owners Alan and Sophia Sabor, who also run St Giles Pantry in the city centre, know their coffee and are keen to show it.
"How about something different? " Alan asked when I ordered my usual one shot Americano Cappuccino. "Why not give a mocha cappuccino with cream a try?" he said. I can honestly say I enjoyed every sip of it. Alan suggested the Almond croissant to complement the coffee which, I can honestly say, really was like no other. The flaky pastry of the croissant was oozing with an almond cream which I devoured in minutes.
No wifi here and what a change that is and with coffee and croissants on the go who cares. Just switch off for a few moments. River Green's ambience is so good that my half hour catch-up with a friend lasted all of 90 minutes.
I was pleased to hear the Pantry is open on Friday nights for something a bit stronger where you can pop in for a glass of wine, cocktail, pizza or even treat yourself to a charcuterie board.
The chairs and tables are quite close to one another but far enough away for you not to feel that people are listening to your conversation. The people here don’t tend to come in large groups either so there’s always plenty of space.
And if it’s a nice day, you can always take your drinks or pastries, down by the lazy river Wensum. Sounds like a fantastic plan for the weekend ahead. Why not give it a go?
