West End smash-hit Sister Act is among the new productions coming to Norwich's Theatre Royal.

The musical based on the Whoopi Goldberg film is among an array of shows announced today in the theatre's new brochure. Sister Act –which will be in Norwich in April – is packed with Motown, funk, soul and disco, and follows the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who, after witnessing a murder, is placed in protective custody in a convent and ends up transforming the convent choir into a major musical act.

John Bultitude, of Norwich Theatre Royal, said: 'We are really excited to be bringing Sister Act to Norwich. It has been huge in London and is based on the hugely popular film. It is going to be a real feel-good musical.

'Once again with our line-up we have a really good mix of shows - from big musicals to challenging drama to the return of old favourites.

'People are able to see West End-calibre shows here in Norfolk without the expense of travelling to the capital.'

The bright lights of 1930s New York will be brought to life in June in the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Wonderful Town featuring Connie Fisher – best-known for winning TV's How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? – and double Olivier Award nominee Michael Xavier.

The casting for the previously-announced Legally Blonde has been confirmed – Dancing on Ice's Ray Quinn, The X Factor's Niki Evans, and Les Dennis are starring in the musical based on the Reese Witherspoon film about homecoming queen Elle Woods who heads for Harvard Law School to swap shopping for studying after being dumped by her boyfriend.

In May, Northern Ballet returns to Norwich with I Got Rhythm while the all-male Shakespeare company Propeller will perform Henry V and The Winter's Tale. A number of soap stars are in the comedy Funny Peculiar in April – Coronation Street duo Craig Gazey (Graeme Proctor) and Vicky Entwistle (Janice Battersby) will perform alongside former Emmerdale star Suzanne Shaw, and EastEnders and Hollyoaks actress Gemma Bissix.

Also in April the English Touring Opera is performing Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. The Cirque Du Ciel company will be performing ShangHi in April – a two hour extravaganza combining acrobatics, modern dance and martial arts.

Dancers from across the region will perform with the English Youth Ballet in Giselle in June, and children's favourite Peppa Pig will entertain families with Peppa Pig's Treasure Hunt in June. Among the one-night shows, music legend Suggs recaps his 30-year career in February while stand-up comedian and Mock the Week host Dara O'Briain will be at the theatre in May.
