Here is Samuel Seaman’s verdict on Dean Smith’s Norwich City, who were dealt their fourth loss in five games by Burnley.

Angus Gunn

Came to the rescue twice outside his box when the hosts sent balls in behind. Dealt comofortably with the only first-half shot that threatened him when Nathan Tella curled into his chest.

One of few Norwich players who can say they've had a good season, having taken his chance with both hands since replacing Tim Krul between the sticks. 6

Max Aarons

Beaten by Zaroury too often and saddled himself with a yellow card early on. Those of a claret and blue persuasion were disappointed he wasn't dismissed for a foul on Jay Rodriguez midway through the second half.

Replaced late on after sustaining a minor injury in that clash. Must improve his form drastically to reach the high bar he set for himself early in his career. 4

Jonathan Tomkinson

A positive in a poor City performance. Stood up to the battle more successfully than in his two Carabao Cup outings earlier this season.

His passing was less than penetrative and that's something Dean Smith will hope to improve, but he made no serious errors in possession.

Dominance of Tella early in the second period incensed the home crowd but displayed the strength and confidence that has endeared him to Smith. 7

Grant Hanley

A tough night for the City skipper, who took abuse from Burnley fans yet to forget his time at Blackburn Rovers before giving away the penalty that made the difference at Turf Moor.

Likely felt he had little choice when Manuel Benson's cross came flying across the Norwich box. Completed far too many aimless long balls after winning possession back. 4

Sam McCallum

Most of the play went down the opposite side, as it tended to in Dimitris Giannoulis' absence. A cracked rib for the Greek means McCallum may now be thrust into the limelight, and these were tentatively positive first steps.

His tiredness showed, however, when he attempted ambitiously to win the ball and was left behind in the lead up to the penalty. 5

Isaac Hayden

Lucky not to be sent off for two offenses in as any minutes. Failed to provide the protection he has previously, with attacking midfielder Tella at the forefront of Burnley's most dangerous moments.

Takes responsibility for the side and always offers for the ball, in contrast to many of his team-mates. Could be one of the key men if City are to haul themselves from the wretched slumber they find themselves in. 5

Marcelino Nunez

Given the talent he clearly possesses, City must see more from the Chilean if he's to fulfil his potential in yellow and green. Left for dead as Burnley countered midway through the first half, and so lacking in involvement his contribution was almost negligible.

Brief resurgence in the first half helped a good spell for the visitors, but he quickly returned to his position on the periphery. He's been a symbol for his side's decline in that his early promise has faded quickly in recent games. 4

Josh Sargent

The oft-seen blend of hard work, some technical successes and a large number of technical struggles. Both he and the isolated Teemu Pukki would have benefitted from the American being deployed in a central role. 5

Gabriel Sara

Flashes of quality but with neither the team-mates to help him nor the requisite consistency to make a real difference. Appears to have cemented a place in the line-up having slotted straight back in after an omission at Bramall Lane through illness.

Looks a tidy operator, but certainly yet to justify his significant price tag. 5

Todd Cantwell

Well overhit chip through for Pukki in the 25th minute summed up his evening. Alternatively, his slip and resultant poke from the ground when found by the Finn early in the second half.

Plenty of endeavour and not a lot of end product, as we've seen repeatedly this season. Crying out for a goal contribution. 5

Teemu Pukki

Totally and completely isolated in a dire first half from an attacking perspective. Made the most when Jordan Beyer slipped to set up Cantwell.

Should have scored in the 89th minute when through on goal, meaning a more clinical edge would have earned the Canaries three points in the last four days.

Can't fault the attitude to keep looking for opportunities when they're rarely presented. 5

SUBSTITUTES

Onel Hernandez (for Cantwell, 62)

One dart towards the area threatened before being stifled by a Jack Cork block. Earned a yellow card for the Burnley midfielder when brought down on the counter. Otherwise little to discuss. 5

Liam Gibbs (for Aarons, 76)

Allowed nothing down his side despite being in an unfamiliar right-back position. Battled well with Anass Zaroury in his first involvement. 5

Jordan Hugill (for Nunez, 85)

A desperate and simple move to try to force the issue. Did very little. N/A
