Norwich City's new goalkeeping coach Dave Watson knows talent when he sees it – and England's Euro 2012 coach believes the Canaries are well-stocked at the back.

Watson played a pivotal role in the formative careers of current England number one Joe Hart, Ben Foster and the highly-rated Jack Butland during a successful club stint at Birmingham prior to joining Norwich this summer. The 38-year-old has already been impressed by what he has seen in the early days of pre-season from City number one John Ruddy and his young deputies Declan Rudd and Jed Steer.

'They've been fantastic. They've tried to embrace everything I have put in front of them,' he said. 'We have sat down and spoken about what we are trying to achieve and the pre-season targets, but this is an ambitious football club, I'm ambitious and so are the three lads here. Speaking to the lads I know they want to improve and hopefully it will be a good combination.

'We've had a tough, but enjoyable, first week. I knew Declan and Jed as I had come across them before so it makes things slightly easier when you come into a new environment, but we're all here to improve. That is the key recipe for success.'

Watson also worked briefly with Ruddy following the City stopper's England elevation prior to his withdrawal from Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad through injury. Watson is keen for that partnership to continue for club and country.

'That was a shame for John what happened prior to the European Championships. Unfortunately these things do happen at major tournaments, but he is fit and well now,' said Watson. 'Working with England at the Euros was a fabulous opportunity for me and something I really enjoyed. Hopefully that will continue during the next year. Right at the minute I am focussing on trying to make a good start here at Norwich.'

Watson told the club's official site his transition from St Andrews had been a smooth one after a reunion with Chris Hughton, Colin Calderwood and Paul Trollope.

'It is a great opportunity for me to work at a fabulous football club like Norwich City,' he said. 'People have made me feel very, very welcome. I know the staff who came slightly before me in the manager, Colin and Paul. I know they are ambitious, they want to be successful and that is something I want to be part of as well.'

Watson views this week's Austrian training camp as an essential part of gearing up for the Premier League kick off at Fulham's Craven Cottage on August 18.

'It's fantastic. We have some good weather and some decent facilities to put the work in and the three lads are working hard and we are working towards the game on Saturday now,' he said.

'The ideal scenario is to work on power, speed and biometric work – the fitness side will come a little later for the keepers.

'The outfield lads are doing their circuits, but we are getting our base work in firstly.

'This week we have took it on from the first week in Norwich. We are upping the intensity, but keeping the physical side going with a couple of gym sessions as well as working out on the pitches.'
