Norwich City Ladies travelled to Enfield Town looking to build on their memorable derby success at Ipswich Town and returned home with a hard-fought goalless draw.

The Canaries had to wait a fortnight to try and continue their momentum and in recent seasons trips to Enfield have always proved tough – as was the case during Sunday's Women's Premier League (WPL) South East Division One clash.

Within just four minutes the play was suspended by the match official due to a hailstorm.

However after a five-minute break play resumed.

Conditions initially made it difficult for Norwich to settle into their passing game, with Enfield making use of the long ball and their aerial ability. But the Norwich back four, led by Kate by Parsons, were equal to the threat.

As the game settled down and with the weather improving, Norwich's attack started to see more of the ball and they saw a number of real chances created for Chelsea Garrett, Ebony Wiseman, Natasha Snelling, Abigail Gower and Ellen Swift – who from outside the 18-yard box went closest with a fine shot just kissing the upright and bar.

After the break City stepped up a gear and took hold of the game, pinning Enfield into their own half for the first 15 minutes. The following quarter-hour period saw equal possession and attempts on both goals, with Fiona Coombes denying Enfield with an excellent save – the only real attempt the hosts had in the half.

The final 15 minutes saw yet another onslaught on the Enfield goal with Bethan Davies making two or three decent saves to deny the Canaries.

In the last 10 minutes Norwich could have taken all three points as Gower's run to the line and cross from the right sent a ball fizzing across the goal with pace. Unfortunately for the yellows, Swift couldn't quite get the connection she wanted and then put the ball wide of the post.

At the death, Wiseman went on a fine solo run and burst past the last defender. However, while her effort from the edge of the box beat the keeper, it also beat the upright.

The final whistle arrived with the score at 0-0 and the points shared.

The draw keeps City sixth in the 12-team table on 23 points, two ahead of Ipswich, with six games remaining.

Their next match comes at home against table-topping Crystal Palace on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

Lowestoft Town were taught a tough lesson when they crashed to a 9-0 defeat at unbeaten league leaders Crystal Palace. The Blues are back in action at home to Gillingham at the weekend (2pm).
