Norwich City confirmed the resignation of chief executive David McNally on Monday morning, following a weekend of speculation about his position.
The club broke their silence with a statement on Monday morning after a series of tweets on Saturday evening from McNally's official Twitter account which indicated he had resigned prior to retracting his resignation.
The club statement said: 'David McNally has resigned from his position as chief executive of Norwich City football club PLC.
'The board of directors has unanimously agreed to accept his resignation and would like to place on record their sincere gratitude for David's game-changing contribution to the football club since he joined in the summer of 2009.
'David played a leading role as the club erased crippling debts and rose from the lower reaches of League One to the Barclays Premier League.
'Everyone at Carrow Road wishes him all the very best for the future.
'Director of Finance Steve Stone has been appointed interim chief executive and the board and everybody at the club is totally focused on supporting Alex and the players, as we head in to Wednesday night's vital Premier League game against Watford at Carrow Road.'
McNally has been chief executive at Norwich City for seven years. He took over when the club was relegated to League One and his reign saw the Canaries return to the Premier League.
But this season has been difficult for Norwich who now face their second relegation from the Premier League in three seasons, following a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.
The chief executive has come in for criticism from some fans and things came to a head on Saturday night when he tweeted to one City supporter, who criticised him on Twitter, that he had resigned.
A few hours later, in the early hours of Sunday morning, McNally retracted his tweet and said he remained committed to the club. The tweets were then deleted.
Then on Monday morning, Norwich City responded to the weekend of speculation by putting out a statement confirming their chief executive's resignation.
The position will be filled on an interim basis by director of finance Steve Stone who joined the club in April last year.
He was previously working as finance director at Gala Bingo, according to his LinkedIn page. Previously he worked for Punch Taverns.
