Jacob Murphy is ready to tell Norwich City he wants to leave the club and pursue a move to Newcastle United, according to reports.
The Chronicle chief sports writer, Lee Ryder, claims the 22-year-old winger has told his agent he wants a move to St James Park amid reports Newcastle have submitted a £10m take-it-or-leave-it offer.
Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez remains determined to land the 22-year-old despite having an £8m offer rejected last week.
The Canaries have reportedly placed a £16m price tag on Murphy's head this summer, just six months after he signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Carrow Road.
Newcastle have made it clear they will not meet that fee but are willing to pay £10m up front with the entire fee guaranteed at the outset.
If Norwich reject this offer then Newcastle will look elsewhere. The Canaries have declined to comment on the speculation.
Murphy was one of the few players to emerge with any credit from last season and also starred at the European Under-21 Championships with England.
Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber made it clear that savings would have to be made this summer but whether the club is willing to part with one of its prized assets remains to be seen.
Jonny Howson and Graham Dorrans have already departed this summer as the club looks to trim its wage bill although it should be said that Norwich have wasted little time making signings themselves. James Husband arrived from Middlesbrough on Tuesday in a £1m deal to become the club's sixth signing of the summer.
