Emi Buendia is confident the goals will come at Norwich City.

The midfield maestro’s impressive assists tally in the Premier League for the Canaries has seen him ranked up alongside the likes of Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, but Buendia is yet to open his goal account in the top flight or the cups this season.

City head coach Daniel Farke challenged the Argentine to up his game at the sharp end, prior to the lockdown, and the 23-year-old aims to deliver ahead of Friday’s resumption behind closed doors against Southampton.

“I work to do my best and help the team in all aspects that I can,” he said. “I try from my side to contribute, either with assists, which luckily I have been able to give several and then with work. With work the goal will come alone.

“We have prepared very well during the break. We are aware of the opportunity presented to us and we are very excited to fight for the most points we can and to achieve our goal.

“Before the break, the day we qualified at Tottenham (in the FA Cup) we already had it clear. We go into every game with the same attitude and that is to win. We are counting on playing the nine Premier matches and the three cup matches. Hopefully this is the case. It would mean that we would have beaten (Manchester) United, the semi-final and that we would be in the final. That is the way in which we are posing it.”

Buendia, speaking to Spanish daily sports newspaper AS, insists he is happy at Norwich and has no burning plans to return to Spain, where he spent his formative years after moving from his native Argentina.

“It’s not something I stop to think about much. I try to live in the present,” he said. “I am very happy here in Norwich, who welcomed me in a spectacular way from the first moment and my family and I felt very comfortable here.

“I try to enjoy the day to day and what happens will come.

“Each League has a style, but I think I can adapt to either one. I played in La Liga with Getafe, now in the Premier with Norwich. The truth is that I feel very comfortable today in this football because of the speed at which it is played and the number of transitions there are.

“I like to keep the rhythm and control of the ball, I can contribute with my characteristics for the speed at which it is played in this football.”

Buendia has a clear plan when it comes to his international ambitions, after featuring for Argentina at under-20 level.

“It is a dream to talk about going with the team, especially for an Argentine player,” he said. “I was lucky to be able to wear the shirt in an u20 World Cup and the truth that thinking about doing it with the senior team .

“I would be very excited. It is something I work for every day. I have to do things well in my club so that later I can have that opportunity.

“I hope things go well for me both here at the club and personally to have that opportunity sooner rather than later.”
