Here is Paddy’s verdict on Dean Smith’s Norwich City, who succumbed in the second half of a commanding cruise from Manchester City.

• Angus Gunn 6

Leaked four goals to the Premier League leaders but made a number of decent stops. Earned a slice of fortune when Bernardo Silva’s curler came back off a post in the sixth minute. Positioning was spot on moments later to collect Ilkay Gundogan’s close range header.

Later beat away Riyad Mahrez’s dig at his near post and clawed Silva’s lob over via the head of Gundogan. Guessed right for Raheem Sterling’s late penalty but the ball span back towards the England international for a simple tap in.

• Max Aarons 4

Replaced in the second half by Sam Byram. Thankless task trying to subdue not only Sterling but the overlapping Olexsandr Zinchenko and Gundogan on occasion. Got precious little back up from Josh Sargent. But a costly miscue from Kyle Walker’s cross was punished by Sterling for the opener.

Then dragged out of position for the run of Gundogan for Phil Foden to double the lead. Rare attacking forays in the first half. Slaloming run into the box as early as the 10th minute but his shot was deflected.

• Grant Hanley (C) 5

So close to a memorable goal but his towering header thudded the base of Ederson’s left hand post. Then was adjudged to have fouled Liam Delap to concede a penalty Dean Smith labelled a ‘pathetic decision’.

Sensed the danger to engage Gundogan on a charge into the box in the first half. Headed a Billy Gilmour cross wide in the 65th minute.

• Ben Gibson 5

Had a chance to clear Gundogan’s low cross bundled home by Foden. Only Fernandinho’s quick reactions prevented him slotting the rebound from Grant Hanley’s header.

Excellent near post interception in the 43rd minute with Gundogan ready to pounce. Headed a Gilmour cross at Ederson in the 78th minute.

• Brandon Williams 5

Looked uncomfortable with those pinpoint diagonal balls aimed at Mahrez. Underlined by the raking pass Mahrez controlled to set up Silva for his big chance. One barnstorming run when he broke up a City counter and then travelled before slipping in Teemu Pukki to test Ederson.

• Billy Gilmour 5

Set piece and crossing threat created chances for both of Norwich’s centre backs. Veered around two to free Pieree Lees-Melou in a move that ended with a chance for Aarons.

• Pierre Lees-Melou 5

Opened up his body to pick out the overlapping Aarons in the 10th minute. Superb inswinging cross met by Hanley, who thumped a header against a post.

• Kenny McLean 6

Choked an excellent sight of goal in the 33rd minute from the edge of the box. But a prodigious amount of work without the ball. That triggered a turnover which saw Milot Rashica drag an angled shot at Ederson.

Did allow Silva too easily to cut inside for his first sighter in the sixth minute. Clever back heel freed Aarons to run in behind.

• Josh Sargent 4

In his defence only recently back in training after a spell out with illness. Certainly looked sluggish in those key aerial duels. Failed to track Ruben Dias’ far post run and header for Sterling to finish.

Was also on his heels when Gundogan took off to deliver a cross for Foden to score. Beaten too easily by Fernandinho in the eighth minute to set up Zinchenko, who crossed for Gundogan to head at Gunn.

• Teemu Pukki 5

Collected Brandon Williams’ slip pass to test Ederson with a rising shot on the angle. Was also the source of McLean’s golden chance when he squared up Ake.

• Milot Rashica 6

Really helped set the tone in the hosts' brightest first half flurry, when he hared back into his own box to intercept and then lead the charge before he was crudely upended by Dias, who earned a booking.

Best home chance of the second half when he collected from McLean but curled at Ederson. Finished the game on the end of a heavy challenge from James McAtee.
