Here is Paddy’s verdict on Norwich City, who rallied in the second half but suffered another defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple-chasing Liverpool on Merseyside.

• Tim Krul 6

First game since ironically the 2-1 Premier League win over Liverpool’s rivals Everton in mid-January. No signs of any rust. Played into trouble by Ben Gibson’s bouncing back pass but showed composure to chest and clear with Divock Origi closing in. No chance with either of Takumi Minamino’s brace. Claimed late on from Luis Diaz.

• Sam Byram 6

Not the easiest of assignments with Diogo Joto ably supported by raiding full back Kostas Tsimikas. Unable to close the space for the cross that led to the opener. Booked for clipping Jota in the first half. Did get a timely block in on Tsimikas in the 19th minute before holding up Jota.

Not so assured when backed up into his own box by the Portuguese, who danced past to drill at Ben Gibson.

• Christoph Zimmermann 6

First outing since August’s League Cup win over Bournemouth. Praised by his head coach for his all-round display. Put his body on the line to thwart Jota and in the second half to divert Jordan Henderson’s goalbound effort.

But appeared to lose his bearings in the muddle that led to the first goal, when he was attracted to Jota and left Divock Origi unmarked. Miscued header also got the treatment with Minamino’s thumping second.

• Ben Gibson (C) 6

Had tracked Joto’s run for the opener but when Christoph Zimmermann also tried to engage the upshot was Origi was left unmarked to tee up Minamino. Broke up a Liverpool counter that sprung Josh Sargent to tee up Lukas Rupp. Passing range in full working order in the sixth minute to spot the run of Milot Rashica.

Survived late home penalty appeals with a crucial block after Jota had danced his way into the area.

• Dimi Giannoulis 6

Had to try and intercept Origi but left Minamino unattended for the opener. Quality delivery carved out a decent chance for Rupp. Then an even better cross was met by the diving Sargent but his header dropped wide.

• Mathias Normann 5

You would expect more from the influential Norwegian international, in terms of putting his stamp on the game, but still working his way back to fitness.

Cute body swerve to veer around Jordan Henderson but too much on the intended pass for Przemyslaw Placheta. Added bite though in the close quarters tackling.

• Lukas Rupp 7

Swinging shot beat Alisson to give Norwich some late reward. Less decisive in the 17th minute when he tried to bring down Dimi Giannoulis’ cutback and lay it off. Looked composed again some illustrious company. May have given Smith food for thought.

• Pierre Lees-Melou 5

Sensed the danger to block Minamino’s first time snapshot in the 20th minute. Very classy in tight spots in how he linked with Normann to get City on the front foot. Wayward pass intended for the overlapping Giannoulis blew a promising counter.

• Przemyslaw Placheta 5

Careered over the hoardings in first half stoppage time. Did not re-appear for the second period but Smith revealed he always planned to introduce Josh Sargent. Too slow to sense the danger when Curtis Jones veered around him and clipped the top of the bar. Lovely instinctive turn away from Tsimikas, but Teemu Pukki dragged a big chance wide.

• Teemu Pukki 5

Much like the league meeting, had a golden chance to beat Alisson in front of the Kop. Failed to even hit the target when Milot Rashica’s heavy touch saw him control and then roll Ibrahima Konate. Cushioned a perfect pass inside the defender for Sargent to drag a first time effort wide of the far post.

• Milot Rashica 6

A threat again like the league duel. Stretched the play with his pace. Instrumental burst let the ball squirm to Pukki. Dragged a low, right footed effort wide from the edge of the box in the second half. Withdrawn as part of a triple change.

Subs:

• Josh Sargent (for Placheta, 45) 6

Made his mark within seconds of arriving when he dragged a shot wide of Alisson’s far post from just inside the area. Booked for hauling down Kostas Tsimikas. Rose unmarked in the 63rd minute but got his body in an awkward shape and the flying header dropped wide. Offered himself for Gibson before committing players and rolling in Pukki.

• Billy Gilmour (for Normann, 61) 5

Threaded a ball through for Jonathan Rowe’s big moment.

• Kieran Dowell (for Pukki, 61) 5

• Jonathan Rowe (for Rashica, 61) 6

Lively cameo again. Capped by the step over and hit on the angle parried by Alisson.

• Kenny McLean (for Rupp, 77) n/a
