Kenny McLean limped out of the 3-2 top flight defeat at Manchester United with what Smith confirmed on Friday morning was a fractured toe.
The Scot however will be available for the Magpies' visit if he comes through a final training session.

Josh Sargent (ankle) will target the trip to Aston Villa as he steps up his fitness following an ankle injury.
Brandon Williams is available after being ineligible against his parent club.
