Dean Smith has ‘mourned’ Norwich City’s relegation from the Premier League – now he has to try and keep on smiling.
The first demotion of his coaching career hit Smith hard, with the Canaries' head coach admitting to feeling everything from anger to frustration.
Norwich City wrap up their season with games at Wolves on Sunday, before hosting Tottenham next weekend, but Smith is trying to set the right tone for the fightback.
“We don't want to finish the season with a sense of doom and gloom. We are all hurting,” he said. “I've gone through a period of mourning now and I want to come out of that and go and enjoy the football games. I enjoyed Leicester for 58 minutes, or whatever it was, and then we had to suffer.
“Fans maybe don't want to see me smiling. But I'm a human being and I want to make sure the players are positive, because if they go into these games and they see me low then you know it's very difficult to go and motivate them and lift them.
"I am not coming into training in a clown’s uniform at the moment, because it's been a tough time, but there's a way to come through it. And that's by having positivity around the group. That's what we're trying to do.
"I want the players to go and enjoy themselves as well and play with a little bit of freedom.”
Smith is not worried about any potential hangover, especially for those in his current squad now facing a third tour of duty back in the Championship.
“We've got two games to finish the Premier League season, but then we're a Championship club again. And we have to get around that very quickly,” he said. “I've said before this dressing room has good, good people.
"They hurt with what's happened. There's no one who hasn't gone and given everything that they could give. We've just been short in areas in this league, but they're good enough to get back. That's for sure.
“What's really good for me now is that we've got a pre-season to work with the players, because that's where you get the majority of your work done in terms of your tactical and physical stuff.
"We'll be working off four points, regarding our style of play and what we're looking for, and we can get that drummed into them during that pre-season.”
