Dean Smith understands the anger from some Norwich City fans after an abject Premier League relegation but knows how to put it right.

Smith addressed the recent protests at home games ahead of the midweek 3-0 defeat at Leicester City.

The Canaries’ boss has the scars from more than 500 games as a coach, but guided Aston Villa to Championship promotion via the play-offs.

Smith takes his squad back to the Midlands on Sunday for a final away game at Wolves, before wrapping up another forgettable top flight tour at home to Tottenham.

“Any team that gets relegated or doesn't do well you can expect people to be angry. It's the performances that are going to keep supporters happy,” he said. “And those fans will have seen a team who were trying at Leicester.

"I'm not saying they're not trying in other games. But you know the perception because of a poor result can be that.

“My mourning was after the Villa game, when we got relegated, and then I have to come through that very quickly. The players’ period of mourning has gone as well. This is a tough league. You don't want to get embarrassed if you're not on it. And our players know that.

“I've always said as a manager when people say, ‘Do you try to model yourself on coaches like Alex Ferguson or a Pep Guardiola?’ No, I'm Dean Smith. I can't be them. I'm not them. We're all different people.

"I'm comfortable with who I am. I've managed over 500 games. So you know I feel I can trust my instincts at times.”
