Dean Smith will strive to get the better of the man with the 'Midas touch’ in Antonio Conte.
Norwich City stand in the way of Tottenham’s bid to seal a place in the Champions League next season, as the Canaries wrap up another Premier League campaign that ended in relegation.
That would mark the latest coaching achievement from Spurs’ demanding Italian boss, who previously won the English top flight with Chelsea and four Serie A titles at Juventus and Inter Milan.
“I remember playing against him with my Brentford team when he was at Chelsea, and later I obviously worked with John Terry at (Aston) Villa for three years and he told me how good a coach he was,” said Smith. “To win the Premier League with Chelsea and then to go back to Italy and win the league with Inter Milan says a lot.
"I picked Ashley Youngs’ brains at the start of this season about how well he had done in Italy. He certainly seems to have that Midas touch at the moment.
“We played them earlier in the season and we looked at their physical statistics before the game and we eclipsed them in all physical metrics. On that day, they ran as hard as they'd run all season.
"That tells you the demands he puts on his team. The players are producing the type of numbers to help them get to where they are in the table.”
Smith has made much play since relegation was confirmed of City’s own desire to finish on a positive note. Not simply for the financial inducement to try and overhaul Watford but to lighten the mood among a frustrated fan base.
The visitors’ desire for the point they require to see off arch rivals Arsenal, and clinch fourth spot, is immaterial to Smith. Stopping the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min is of more pressing concern.
“What is riding on this game for Tottenham doesn't affect us at all,” he said. “I’ve had texts off Arsenal fans, texts off Tottenham fans. I have no allegiance to either. It's our last home game of the season, last Premier League game of the season, and I've said before that we'll try and win because we want to get points.
“We are obviously aware of the threats that they have, especially with the top two. I don't really need to go and put too many videos on for the players to see because they watch them every week.
"Son is one of the best players at making deep runs into the space behind you. Harry Kane is an unbelievable finisher who can play as a nine or a 10. They have a threat all over the pitch, and it's something that our players have to be ready for.”
Norwich lost 3-0 in the reverse fixture in December on a day Smith felt City deserved more, utilising a three-pronged central defensive formation that had another outing in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Wolves.
“There's a lot made of formations. At times, the biggest indicator for any football team is not the formation, it's the style of play,” he said. “Look no further than Liverpool for that. The changes they made during the week, and the performance they got against Southampton, that really comes down to their style of play, not their formation.
"We were leading 1-0 at Anfield after about an hour and they changed their formation and managed to get the win against us. Certainly our style of play is something that we're looking to build during pre-season.
"But we could go as a five obviously against Tottenham after playing that way at their place, and against Wolves.”
Ben Gibson is a major injury doubt with the back issue he suffered in the closing stages at Molineux. Billy Gilmour (ankle) will not feature but Mathias Normann is fit for selection after his own ankle issue at Wolves.
“Ben is struggling with his back. He hasn't trained since last week,” said Smith. “He picked up the injury against Wolves. I'm hopeful that he might train today (Saturday), but we don't know.”
