Teemu Pukki has opened up on a lonely spell in the MLS that has negatively impacted his involvement with Finland.
The Norwich City legend moved Stateside after departing Carrow Road in 2023 after five free-scoring years in Norfolk, which saw him become the Canaries' fourth record goalscorer, behind only Iwan Roberts, Terry Allcock and Johnny Gavin.
Life at Minnesota United has been more testing for Pukki, who started only 11 times and scored four goals during the most recent MLS campaign.
His contract at the Allianz Field is up in the summer, and speculation in Finland is swirling about a potential homecoming to either HJK or former club KTP, but Pukki opted against commenting on his future.
However, he did open up about his struggles in the US without his family, who have remained in Finland.
"The year in the club team has been something of a farce," City legend Pukki told Finnish outlet Yle Urheilu.
"It's been a little lonely at times. The family is here [in Finland]. When my daughter went to school, we decided that it is better to start school here in Finland. There is not so much time left abroad.
"Of course, they have been there from time to time, but when you're alone [it's hard]. There is a guy next door [Robin Lod] that makes it easier. There is a guy that you can open up to about matters on and off the field. It has been a big support."
Pukki's lack of game time for Minnesota has negatively impacted his prospects of playing for Finland.
Despite being his country's record goal-scorer, Pukki has started just one of their last three international matches, and knows more consistent form for his club is the key to earning more starts for Finland.
"I know that I haven't really played any minutes anywhere," Pukki admitted. "We have other strikers who score goals in big roles in their own clubs. It is understandable that the starting lineup's place in the national team is not realistic at the moment.
"I used to think about it more. If, at some point, there was a thought that the qualifiers could have been the last, then I don't want to end like this either. There is still a fire to show what I can do, and I believe that I can still help the national team.
"If the invitation to play goes through next year as well, of course, I hope that I will be able to play more."
