Chorley 2 King’s Lynn Town 1
Adam Lakeland said he was proud of his players after King’s Lynn Town’s unbeaten run came to an end in a battle between two of the top three in National League North.
Lynn were two down at the break – the first given as an own goal by keeper Paul Jones, but disputed by Lynn players, the second a long-range effort on the stroke of half-time. Lynn were better after the break but Gold Omotayo’s injury-time goal was simply a consolation.
“Really proud of the players today,” said Linnets boss Lakeland. “This is a really difficult place to come. They're one of the best teams, if not the best team, in the league.
“They were rightly ahead, they were better than us in most departments, I felt, in the first half. They just looked a little bit sharper, a bit quicker to second balls. They played with the ball with better quality than we did. We didn't really get going until the second half.
“Probably the biggest disappointment is the goals. The first one’s really poor - off a long throw, it bounces in our six-yard box. The lads are adamant that it's not touched anybody and has gone over the line before Greg (Taylor) has tried to clear it, but then I've been told that it rightly stood, so until we see we won't know, but it's gone now anyway.
“And then the second one, it’s killed us because we've got a situation where we’re 25 yards out, Gold has gone to play it to Fin Barnes, not made the pass, they've broke down the other end and scored from 30 yards, right on the stroke of half-time and that just absolutely kills us, because as good as they were and as poor we were in the first half, if we go in at 1-0 then you saw what happened on Tuesday (at Spennymoor), we can improve the second half and maybe get something out of the game.
“But when it’s 2-0 at a place like this it is incredibly difficult.
“The second half, just really proud of the players for keeping going. We had to ride our luck on occasions, which you have to do when you're 2-0 down and you’ve got to push and force the game. But we kept going until the end, scored a really good goal, and I think had we got it five minutes earlier, it would have been a really interesting finish.”
Lynn had headed north on the back of a six-game run which had seen them jump to second in the table – they now drop to third, with Chorley leapfrogging them.
One positive note for Lynn was the return from injury of leading scorer Jonny Margetts, who came off the bench for the final quarter of an hour.
The Linnets have an opportunity to get back to winning ways when they return to The Walks on Tuesday to face Farsley Celtic.
