Alan Neilson is seeing a growth in the mentality of Norwich City's youngsters after they produced a quick response to beat Sparta Prague at Carrow Road.

It marked the second time in a few days that City's U21s were able to respond to adversity as Errol Mundle-Smith slotted home a late winner just five minutes after Ondrej Penxa's equaliser.

After coming from behind to beat Southampton's U21s last Friday, Neilson feels that the ability to dig deep to win matches is a trait needed in their pursuit of first-team football at Carrow Road.

"The mentality is getting better all the time," Neilson told the Pink Un. "I wouldn't say it's perfect, but if you're going to go in the first-team, then you've got to have a winning mentality, a mentality to never give up and work even when you think that you're tired.

"You could see that with the goal from Errol [Mundle-Smith], and their defenders were really tired, but he won the race and finished the goal really well.

"If you outwork teams then, with their ability, they have a chance to win games. The game swayed quite a bit.

"First half, we had a lot of possession and second was more spells. For the first goal, we got in behind them, and it was a good cross and Welchy [scores]. We've said to him about adding end product, he's got in the middle of the goal and taken it really well."

City's win has handed them the ideal start to their Premier League International Cup campaign that will also see them host PSV, Nordsjaelland and Hertha Berlin at Carrow Road before January in Group C for a chance of qualification.

Neilson feels the opportunity to face different sides, coupled with the extra exposure of more games in Carrow Road, will prove to be an invaluable learning experience for City's youngsters.

"It's fantastic. Normally, in our season, we get to play three games at Carrow Road. Now we've got four extra International Cup games here, which is superb," the City U21s boss said.

"Different clubs and different opportunities from PSV to Nordsjaelland, which we're really looking forward to.

"It's different nationalities and different mindsets that we're coming up against. It's all about learning for these young players"
