Jamal Lewis wants to add to his Championship title win at Norwich City after becoming the first British player to play for Sao Paulo.

The 26-year-old made his debut as a second half substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 away win over Cruzeiro in the Brasileirão – the top tier competition in Brazilian club football.

Lewis was a domestic title winner during his breakthrough period at Norwich, before moving onto Newcastle.

But the attacking left-back agreed a surprising season long loan, with a buy option, to try his luck in south America in the closing days of the summer transfer window.

Tricolor are fifth behind leaders Botafogo, who they face on Wednesday night (local time) in the first leg of the Libertadores quarter-finals – commonly seen as the continent's Champions League equivalent.

“Even though it was an away game, it was great to see the fans, they made a lot of noise and supported the players, I am grateful to them,” said the Northern Irish international. “I have seen games at home, I hope to be able to receive all this affection and show this atmosphere, it will be incredible to be able to play at home.

"Sao Paulo is a huge club in Brazil and Brazilian football is very well regarded in Europe, especially in England. I am just arriving, but we want to win, win the trophy, add another ‘World Cup’ to our list.

“I have played my entire career in England and I have always said that I would like to play in a league in another country, to learn another culture, another type of game.

"The career is short, it is a great opportunity to be in a different place, to win games, lift trophies and be part of a club that will achieve a lot. It is an exciting project and I want to be at this club for a long time.”

Lewis is ready to embrace the challenge on and off the park.

“In terms of speaking Portuguese, it’s a process. I’m going to take some classes. I’d love to learn the language and embrace the city’s culture,” he said, at his official unveiling. “It’s much more about me adapting to the environment than it is about it adapting to me.

"I’m going to work hard to learn Portuguese and communicate with the entire team and the fans. Some athletes are helping me, but I’ll have a teacher in a few weeks and I hope to learn Portuguese.

“Brazil is so well known for its culture, its people, and its love of football since childhood. I love Brazilian football, the beaches, watching Ronaldinho and other players in the World Cup. I am very proud to come and play in Brazil, I want to immerse myself in the culture.

"There are many athletes coming to Brazil, which shows the quality of the league and Brazilian football. I want to take advantage of it.”
