Runners hoping to organise the region's newest Parkrun have revealed details about the proposed route.

They want to start an event in Beccles and have already met with Parkrun officials to discuss their plans and have the support of the town council.

A public meeting is being held on Sunday to gauge local interest and establish the next steps.

Keziah Hopkins and John White, members of the Beccles and Bungay Harriers AC, are behind the project.

They want the run to be based at the town quay, near to the river Waveney.

However, because the area is prone to flooding in the winter and becomes extremely muddy, the organisers believe they will need an alternative route during the winter months.

The routes have not been finalised and are still being discussed with officials.

However, it is understood that the summer route could head from the quay field under the road bridge and alongside the Waveney up towards the sailing club.

Ms Hopkins, road and trail running co-ordinator for the club, said: “This is a huge joint effort for the community. A Parkrun would put Beccles on the map and showcase the quay."

Mr White, a running coach and committee member for the club, has been travelling elsewhere to do Parkruns for 14 years.

“I would love a Parkrun in Beccles. We want a local Parkrun for locals. Having to travel to one is not ideal.”

Parkruns closest to Beccles are in Lowestoft and Harleston, with two more along the coast in Gorleston and Great Yarmouth.

Lowestoft was described as one of the “most breath-taking” in the country by the BBC last year.

Paul Cunningham, town clerk at Beccles Town Council, said: “The council are very supportive of the idea. We are keen for a Parkrun route in Beccles.”

The meeting will take place on Sunday, September 15, at 10am in Space at the Quay.
