King’s Lynn Town 1 Peterborough Sports 2

King’s Lynn Town’s early-season surge came to a sudden end at The Walks.

Lynn - who had won three of their previous four games - saved their best to last, thanks to a late Jonny Margetts goal, but their kitchen sink efforts weren’t enough and Dan Jarvis’s brace took the points back along the A47.

It was Lynn’s second home defeat to Sports in the last seven games, going back to the final home game of last season.

Lynn boss Adam Lakeland made one change from the team that won at Marine on Saturday, with defender Josh Coulson coming in for Ross Crane, who was out with a knock.

There was an early surprise when former Linnets striker Michael Gash started at centre-back for the visitors - but an even bigger one with less than three minutes on the clock when Sports went ahead, with a brilliant left-foot volley by Jarvis from Oisin Gallagher’s clipped ball out to the left.

Josh Hmami had Lynn’s first sight of goal, on 20 minutes, creating space well 25 yards out and hitting a right-footed effort that drifted just wide.

Gold Omotayo flicked a Freddie Sass long throw just over the bar as play began to get closer to Peter Crook’s goal.

Hmami was pulling as many strings as he could, but Sports were making Lynn work hard, and looking capable of inflicting more damage when they exploited Lynn’s right flank.

Good work by Omotayo teed up McCammon for a shot that was blocked but Lynn failed to make the breakthrough by half-time, leaving the visitors with 45 minutes to hold on – something they looked quite adept at doing.

Lakeland made a change at the break, Tommy Hughes replacing Dylan Crowe, and the former Ipswich Town man was quickly into his stride.

But Hughes played a part in Sports’ second, when he received a poor pass from Cody Johnson, lost possession to Dion Sembie-Ferris who made ground to the edge of the area, played in Jarvis on the right of the area and he slid the ball Jones.

Lynn almost pulled one when back Sass curled one that came off the bar – easily the closest the hosts had been in 56 minutes of football.

Kyle McFadden hooked one on to the top netting from a corner, but keeper Grook was still largely untroubled.

Lakeland replaced Omotayo with Bart Cybulski with 25 minutes to go, but it was fellow sub Tom Wilson who went close, glancing a header from Hmami’s free-kick from deep on the left just past the post.

It was Hmami who squandered a huge opportunity for Lynn to get back into the game, the midfielder inexplicably missing the target from eight yards after being put through by Hughes.

Margetts gave Lynn hope with eight minutes remaining, hooking home a shot after Cybulski had nodded Hughes’ cross from the left across the area.

Hmami went for glory with a shot that was inches high, but Lynn’s hopes of a comeback failed to materialise.
