King’s Lynn Town boss Adam Lakeland has praised Jonny Margetts for his scoring touch – and the impact he has on players around him.
A frustrated Margetts had to sit out the first two games of the season through suspension, but was quick off the mark on his season debut on Tuesday, his 45th-minute goal against Rushall in midweek proving to be the match winner after Gold Omotayo’s early opener.
It owed much to a brilliant lung-busting run by Josh McCammon and the perfect lay-off for Margetts to do what he does best – and what Lakeland will want to see more of when the Linnets head to Marine on Saturday.
“So pleased for him to get off the mark in his first game because he's been so frustrated watching those first two games,” said Lakeland.
“I'm sure that's not going to be the first time this season we're going to see Omotayo and Margetts on the score sheet. We've got two proven goal scorers there at the top end of the pitch and that should make any opposition be wary of us.
“They do say you're only as good as your strikers, so we've got two proven goal scorers there. I felt there were times (against Rushall) where they could have been better, but they've scored two goals, one each, we've won the game 2-1 and they've done the job.”
Margetts bagged nine goals in 14 starts last season.
“He's a goal scorer - he proved that when he came in in January,” said Lakeland. “He scored some vital goals for us, but it's not just his goals. He works hard, he's got a bit of Yorkshire grit in him. He demands of himself and his team-mates, he leads by example through his work rate and the way he is around the training ground day day to day. He's just a top lad and a top goal scorer.”
Lynn face a Marine side beaten 3-0 at home by Farsley Celtic in midweek and by the same scoreline at Scunthorpe last Saturday. They drew their opener at home to Oxford City and while it has been a tough start, the numbers won’t fool Lakeland.
“Any time you go up to the Liverpool teams, it's going to be tough,” he said. “They're a newly-promoted team and so we expect a tough game. Every game is a big game because you want to win it, so we'll show Marine as much respect as we do every other opponent.”
Lakeland will be without Kian Ronan, who suffered concussion in midweek, while Bartosz Cybulski and Finn Whitely are carrying knocks.
