Johannes Hoff Thorup wants Norwich City to despise losing on his watch.

The Canaries have moved across Belgium to their base in Liege ahead of Saturday’s final tour friendly against Standard.

City were beaten 3-0 by champions Club Brugge earlier in the week, but even in pre-season the new head coach wants a winning mindset.

“It's also important to have that in mind, we should not lose too many games. And we should not be a team that is used to losing games,” he said. “All respect to Northampton, it was also an important one for us to get started this summer, but this is the level where our ambition is; to get up to this level or to be able to compete on this level.

"So it's important for us to get some of those answers.

“We see who are the players who can cope with a press like that, with intensity in the game like that. And we also see where we have to improve and where we have to be better. It’s good to get these answers in pre-season.

“The way that we want to build the game, the way that we want to control the game, and is that possible against a team like Brugge? It also helps us to work out where do we need to keep our focus for the upcoming training weeks, and so on.”

City were 2-0 down within nine minutes but Thorup has only started to focus on defensive shape since arriving in Belgium, after an intensive fortnight at Colney embedding his possession-based strategy.

“We had some positions on the field we were not working collectively well enough,” he said. “We got a little bit too man-orientated in some situations, but also a little bit too passive, which we of course need to do better.

"We have to use a couple weeks more to get ready, and to ensure the players understand the movements and positions and so on.

“But there was also some very, very good counter attacks and transition moments and we should have scored in the first half on some of these. Our big chances came from high pressing and interceptions. Some good stuff, some bad stuff, and definitely a good learning game.”
