Norwich City number one Angus Gunn’s impressive shot-stopping display in Scotland’s 1-1 Euro 2024 draw against Switzerland was hailed by former Manchester City and England goalie Joe Hart.

Gunn had no chance with a stunning long-range hit from Xherdan Shaqiri, which cancelled out Scott McTominay’s deflected opener, but thwarted the Swiss in key moments to keep alive the Tartan Army’s hopes reaching the knock-out stages.

Hart, who won 75 caps in a nine-year stint with the Three Lions and announced his playing retirement last season after landing a treble with Celtic, is working for the BBC at the tournament.

The 37-year-old picked out Gunn’s fingertip stop to halt Dan Ndoye, as he burst through the middle of the Scottish backline in the second half, as his stand-out save.

“A huge moment in the game,” he said. “He stood big and made the forward shoot, and got a trailing hand to it. Angus probably thought he was going to sidefoot it to his left, but you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. When the ball is hit so fast it just needs a little touch.

“There is so much going on when you talk about the science of goalkeeping. That is not a fluke. You want to cover as much of the goal for as long as possible. He will have got up and immediately thought to himself, ‘That was a huge moment and I am feeling good about that because I work hard every day to execute that moment for my team’.

“I was flying during the first game (5-1 defeat to Germany) and when I landed on Friday I have people coming up to me asking, ‘Had I seen this goal?’ or ‘Had I seen that goal?’ and when I watched it back it was a tough game for Angus.

"Not an easy one for Angus at all and he played his part in a difficult loss but I thought he was exceptional in this game.

“He made some good decisions. I love to talk about general play - saves happen because that is what you train for every day - but you could see in the general play the team really trust him.

"He also made a big save in the first half when he gets a strong hand to a shot. It might not look a really good save but everything is in the forward’s favour in that situation.”

Gunn was also praised post-match by his national team boss Steve Clarke, who was asked by reporters did he have any fears about the City keeper retaining his place following a German drubbing.

"I’m glad you asked me that question. That is what you need from your goalkeeper," said Clarke. "That is what we've seen with Angus. We are a team when we come to this type of match, like most countries, when you come to these games you need your keeper to make big saves. That is what he did.

"He made two or three big saves and that’s what you need. Even though one of them was awarded a goal kick. But that is what you need. Your keeper to make saves at key times. I am really pleased for him."
