Former Norwich City striker Gary Hooper has been released by defeated National League play-off semi finalists Barnet.

The experienced striker signed for the Bees earlier in the season in a surprise move having spent the last four years playing in New Zealand, Cyprus, UAE and India.

Hooper joined Barnet back in October, making only 10 appearances and scoring twice in all competitions.

The 36-year-old hasn’t featured for Dean Brennan’s side since December owing to personal reasons and has departed the club after their hefty 4-0 play-off semi final defeat to Solihull Moors last weekend.

City FA Youth Cup winner Reece Hall-Johnson has been retained by the London outfit ahead of next season.

Hooper will now weigh up his future and decide whether or not to continue a career that started with Grays Athletic  back in 2003.

It has included spells at Scunthorpe United, who voted Hooper as their best ever player in 2012, and Celtic.

Norwich beat fierce competition to sign Hooper from Celtic for £5million back in 2013 in a summer spending spree under Chris Hughton that brought Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Leroy Fer and Nathan Redmond to Carrow Road.

Hooper was unable to keep Norwich in the top flight, and scored 20 times in 70 appearances for the Canaries in all competitions.

The striker left Norwich to join Sheffield Wednesday in January 2016 in a deal reportedly worth £3m.
