Norwich City had to settle for an FA Cup third-round replay in the south west as they drew 1-1 with Bristol Rovers at Carrow Road.

The Canaries were second-best for large parts of the game, stretching their winless run to four games after head coach David Wagner made eight changes to his starting line-up.

The League One side had the best of the early exchanges, but were pegged back in the 12th minute by some Onel Hernandez brilliance. He out-muscled Tristan Crama to meet Adam Forshaw's pass, squaring to Barnes for a simple finish.

The Gas had the goal they deserved before long however, courtesy of a trademark City error at the back. George Long thought he'd ended the Rovers attack with a fine save from Harvey Vale, but Kellen Fisher's poor pass out allowed Grant Ward to fire into the top corner.

Rovers somehow went into half-time level after a fantastic save from Long and the near post denied Jevani Brown and Antony Evans respectively, but Norwich were in control after the restart.

They had a golden chance to take the lead when Hernandez nutmegged his marker and flashed across the face of goal, but substitute Adam Idah contrived to deny him a second assist by failing to connect from three yards out.

The Canaries struggled to create therein, against a side content with starting again at their home ground. The Norfolk side now add a third-round replay to their busy fixture list, populating the week between the trip to Hull and West Brom's NR1 visit.

KEY MOMENTS

3 - Ward drives inside and strikes at goal firmly, but Long saves and holds his shot.

5 - Martin flicks a corner into a dangerous area, where Giannoulis is waiting to clear.

9 - The visitors clear as far as Forshaw, who slices comfortably over from 25 yards.

12 - GOAL NORWICH (Barnes): Hernandez out-muscles Crama to reach Forshaw's pass, before squaring to Barnes for a simple finish.

14 - Sargent turns his marker well and finds Sainz wise, prompting the Spaniard to drive to the edge of the box. His shot doesn't have enough bend, however, and flies wide of the far post.

17 - GOAL BRISTOL ROVERS (Ward): Long's great save falls to Fisher after Vale found space, but the right-back passes straight to Ward to fire into the top corner.

19 - Sargent and Sainz exhange passes before the former shoots from a tight angle, Cox equal to it at the near post.

36 - Barnes plays Sargent through and he returns the favour, but the former Burnley man can't get a clean shot off under pressure.

36 - Forshaw chips to the back post and Hanley, whose looping header doesn't have enough power on it to beat Cox.

43 - Long makes an unbelievable save to hook Brown's effort away from goal, before Evans smashes the post on the rebound.

Half time: Norwich City 1-1 Bristol Rovers

51 - Hernandez nutmegs his marker before flashing across for Idah, who somehow fails to tap in from three yards out.

56 - Gibbs fires the ball into Idah and he turns and shoots, but drags wide from 15 yards.

Full time: Norwich City 1-1 Bristol Rovers
