Mark Hughes has promised to wield the axe at King's Lynn Town as he tries to avert the downward spiral of the new National League North season.

Lynn are third from bottom of the table after a 1-0 defeat at Warrington, where midfielder Josh Barrett did not feature.

It is understood Barrett is the subject of interest from National League Aldershot Town, where he would be reunited with former Lynn boss Tommy Widdrington, who also worked with him at Bristol Rovers.

Barrett has a year remaining on his contract so Lynn will be demanding a fee for the 25-year-old.

Hughes now has a two-week break to make his changes which he hopes will coincide with a return of some of his injured players.

A new goal scorer looks to be top of his wish-list: Lynn have drawn blanks in four of their last six games in all competitions.

“That's obviously a worry, so we'll be working really hard to get another forward in, in the two-week period,” said Hughes. “Even in the last week we've had boys in training with us who look really good and now it's probably time to go and get them.

“And it's also time for a conversation with a few of the boys that played today that it's probably best that they move on.

Defender Kyle Callan-McFadden was missing at Warrington, joining Adam Crowther on the injury list, albeit short-term, while Manny Oke was suspended.

The constant stream of injuries this season has undoubtedly contributed to the wretched start to the season.

“If it was my XI out there and we lost 1-0 to Warrington and we’re sitting in the bottom four - I understand football and what would happen, but I’ve not had my XI on the pitch,” said Hughes. “I think it’s vitally important that the fans can see that I'm working hard, they can see that the boys that aren't here are desperate to get back and play for King’s Lynn.”

Next up for Lynn is a home game against Buxton on October 7.
