Last May, a few days before the final game of the season, my Leeds-supporting mate said to me: "I bet you want us to lose and go down with your lot."
I quickly replied, to his surprise: "No, actually!"
No, I wasn't going soft towards Leeds. It was just that I thought Leeds would be more of a threat to us in the Championship than Burnley would.
As we know, Leeds survived and Burnley were relegated and I was happy hearing that a manager-less Burnley, with the talk of them having so much debt, would be joining us in the Championship. I was really not bothered about them this season. I even thought they might suffer a double relegation like Sunderland did in 2018.
Little did I know that Burnley would get Vincent Kompany and, as some might say, the rest is history.
I remember watching Burnley’s first game of this season, when I realised I had to rethink my views on how they would fare this season.
They were playing super attacking football from the first day, something us Norwich fans experienced during the Daniel Farke days. They knew what style of football to play to get out of the Championship and possibly why we were so impatient with Dean Smith, with his style and approach to the game.
Kompany quickly got into his players and they got on board with him. You knew early on it was only going to go one way for Burnley. They have been phenomenal this season and they are currently on a fantastic run of eight consecutive wins. Let’s hope the classic ‘Along Come Norwich’ comes to fruition this weekend.
The feelgood factor has certainly been around the club since David Wagner’s arrival. I can’t see why we can’t follow Burnley back to the Premier League, even if it is via the play-offs. Us fans have always thought with this team we have the potential to be right up there in the promotion race.
I heard an interview with David Wagner this week that’s definitely got me excited for the next few months.
Wagner stated he has always kept an interest in Norwich whilst Stuart Webber is here. He understands the community side of the club, which brings the people not just from Norwich, but the county, and he has shown that by getting involved with so much, from the post-match celebrations to Duncan’s club at The Nest.
Hearing Wagner say he doesn’t watch all football on TV, as he easily gets bored, was an interesting one and one I can relate to. He can’t watch dull negative football even if it does get you success.
People think I watch football 24/7. Certainly not. Not interested in the Manchester Uniteds or Chelseas of this world on TV, unless they are playing us. I would certainly prefer to be watching one of my daughter's favourite cartoons.
Wagner says he wants to see football with high intensity and aggressive football. I’m definitely buying into his philosophy. And it seems the players are as well.
In just four weeks, me, like many other Canaries, have jumped on the latest Canary rollercoaster. And if it’s anything like our first three games, it’s going to be fun.
It’ll be nice heading to Carrow Road this lunchtime with everybody pulling the same way. As we are on TV again, let’s hope for good winter sunshine because Carrow Road looks even more beautiful when the sun is shining. Also, let’s make sure we are all rocking loud and proud at Carrow Road today.
Come on, you mighty Yellows!
