A top Suffolk match angler has carried off the Cross Drove League championship for a third time.

Jim Barrowman, performing under the PW Angling Tackle banner, wheeled up a two-day total of 131lb 8oz to pocket the £1,000 top prize.

Richard Bond (Matrix Image) collected £500 for his runner-up 121lb 11oz, followed by Chris Vandervliet (Drennan/Bait Tech) £400 for 103lb 12oz.

On day one, Oulton Broad's hat-trick hero scaled 115lb 15oz and hung onto his lead with a meagre second-day return of 15lb 9oz, ahead of Bond with 74lb 3oz and 47lb 8oz and Vandervliet, 57lb and 46lb 12oz.

The triumphant 60-year-old retired building company director said: 'The well-stocked Cross Drove is one of my favourite venues.

'I struggled for fish on day two but luckily so did my nearest challengers.'

Rob Morter, owner of the eight-acre lake that contains a variety of fish species as well as carp, said the league was very popular.

'Jim performed superbly on the first day but was rather fortunate to get away with a low catch on day two.'

In the meantime, Karl Redgrave extended his lead in the Nisa Feeder King of the Yare tournament with another devastating performance.

The Angling Direct favourite to win the competition advanced his prospects with a bream catch of 39lb 6oz from peg 97, boosting his nine round aggregate to 216lb 15oz.

Runner-up on the day was Brian Gooch (Angling Direct) with 34lb 9oz from 82, then Paul Hudson (Deben) with 30lb 15oz from 61 to remain the leader's nearest challenger with 190lb 4oz.

Redgrave, a 49-year-old sales engineer from Harleston, has five more rounds to negotiate.

At present, he has two poor results to dump under the best eight from 14 rounds and that makes him favourite to clinch the trophy.

However, he needs no reminding that he rose from nowhere last season to finish third overall after winching out 69lb 4oz of bream in the final round.

'If one of nearest challengers manages that it could certainly upset my plans,' he said.

Glen Hubbard takes honours at Martham

The Norwich and District Open event on the River Thurne at Martham was won by Glen Hubbard (Angling Direct) with 42lb 12oz of bream ranging to 4lb.

He caught them on both feeder and float on mainly worm bait.

Top team were Wensum Valley (Daniel Brydon, Martin Pope, James Boughton) with eight penalty points, followed by Weavo's (nine) and PW Angling (10).

Brydon with 147lb 8oz and Dennis Goodwin (Kingfishers) 116lb 11oz, headed Reepham events. Successes at Bergh Apton were Codgers' Charlie King (191lb 14oz) and Barry Brooks (166lb 1oz). Wicklewood winners were Steve Brown (Dereham) 154lb 8oz and Graham Kettle (Oddfellows) 134lb 10oz.

Bridge Farm best was Andy Morrow (B/F) 137lb 12oz, Simon Parker (Angling Direct) bagged 137lb 14oz at Mill Farm and veteran Monty Norman won at Topcroft with 116lb 8oz.

Meanwhile carp anglers are enjoying a bumper August with 20 pound plus specimens. Best reported a 34lb 8oz Catch 22 common for James Rooks and a 30lb Taswood ghostie for Matthew Ireland.
