The golfers of Norfolk turned out in force at Royal Cromer on Bank Holiday Monday to support one of their own.

The club and the County Golf Union came together to co-host an event in support of Brad Smith, who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer and had his right leg amputated.

A county and club player of considerable note, Brad had been working as an assistant professional at Thetford when the illness struck.

An impressive total of 228 players in teams of four split into two shotgun starts, with some teams starting at 9am and others at 2pm in what turned out to be a fantastic day played out on a superb course in brilliant sunshine.

The morning competition was won by the team of Kieran Chapman, Kevin Chapman, Matthew Sturman and Peter Sturman from Costessey Park with 97 Stableford points while in the afternoon the Royal Cromer foursome of Mick Tanner, Ron Stamford, Stan Blackman and Rick Taylor came out on top with an equally impressive score of 95 Stableford points.

Brad came along in the afternoon to present the prizes to the winners and receive the acclamation of his many friends.

Meanwhile, young Norfolk player Warren Bates claimed not one but two course records as he won his club championship at Heacham Manor.

The young star set a new mark with 68 on Saturday and then fired a 67 the following day to consign his opening day score to the history books.

King's Lynn's annual Ladies Invitation Day attracted 21 teams for an AM AM. The winners were Liz Tollit, Polly Norman, Jane Howard and Tracy Rawlings with 100 points followed by Anne Lawman, Dorothy English, Jacquie Reeks and Trish McManus.

Meanwhile member Les Watson recorded an hole-in-one during the Jack Large Trophy. He achieved his success on the fifth hole.

The Senior Captain's Day at Ryston Park, a pairs atableford won by Graham Warren and Barry Moull with a joint score of 74.

Henry Saddleton, just six, won the British Junior Tournament at Thorpe Hall with a plus one score and also won the club's Junior Open.
