Norfolk is to be hit with freezing conditions this week as arctic winds bring sub-zero temperatures.

An amber alert has been issued by the Met Office for severe cold weather, prompting warnings for people to look out for the vulnerable.

Here is a day-by-day forecast of when the freezing temperatures will hit the region this week, according to Weatherquest forecaster Adam Dury. 

Monday, December 5

There will be rain on and off throughout the day due to showers arriving from the northeast which will linger across Norfolk overnight, particularly on the coast.

Highs of 8C will be felt during the day but by night isolated spots inland in the southwest could see lows of 0C.

Tuesday, December 6

It will be a dry start for most of the region but more showers will arrive from the northeast during the day. 

The showers will clear later on apart from along the eastern coastline.

Temperatures will reach highs of 7C during the day but by night it will fall to 2C on the coast and there may be a patch of frost in the southwest. 

Wednesday, December 7

The southwest will see a frosty start with temperatures around freezing. 

Showers will remain in eastern coastal areas but it will be dry inland and to the west.

Overnight, temperatures are set to fall below freezing for much of the region.

Thursday, December 8

It will be a cold start for Norfolk with widespread frosts.

Lows of -2C will be felt across the county while rural areas in the southwest could see mercury levels fall to -4C.

There is a small chance of wintry showers, particularly to the east.

Friday, December 9

Temperatures will remain around -4C across the county in the morning which will rise to highs of 3C during the day.

Arctic winds will cause a windchill that will feel below freezing.

Saturday, December 10

Saturday will be colder still with -4C lows in the morning which will only rise to highs of 0C.

A number of places could remain below freezing throughout the day.

Sunday, December 11

There will be a frosty start once again with -3C lows and during the day it will remain cold, reaching highs of 1C depending on cloud coverage.
