A new link road could be needed to allow thousands of new homes to be built on land south and west of Great Yarmouth.

The road would run from the A143 around Bradwell to connect with Market Road.

Great Yarmouth Borough Council believes the scheme could help ease existing traffic congestion, as well as boost local housing.

In a newly-published document, the council says the existing junction of the A143 (Beccles Road) with Mill Lane, Church Lane and Long Lane is too congested, and is constraining Bradwell’s ability to expand westwards.

The idea to build a link road around Bradwell as one possible solution to the congestion is mentioned in a draft consultation document for the borough’s forthcoming local plan - which will outline how the area should grow until 2041.

Officers at the council say that to meet demand the borough needs to build some 7,060 new homes between 2021 and 2041.

The link road could at least be partly paid for by building up to 2,000 new homes on land around it, with housing developers making contributions towards it.

It could then potentially allow more homes to be built on land further south and west of Bradwell.
