Concerns about the suitability of the directors of a nursery school lay behind the sudden suspension of its Ofsted registration, the inspectorate has said.

The statement came as it published a report which confirmed it had judged Eaton Park Nursery School 'inadequate' in all areas.

The report, which followed an inspection on July 5, said: 'Leaders and managers have failed to implement effective systems to ensure the safety of the premises and equipment. This fails to keep children safe from harm.'

It said the learning and development needs of individual children were not met, and weaknesses identified during a visit in January 2016 'have not been addressed effectively'.

However, it also said children form secure attachments with adults, and 'generally behave well'.

After issuing a welfare requirements notice, a monitoring visit on July 20 found 'the provider had taken some action and had plans in place to make further improvements'.

An Ofsted spokesman said: 'We can confirm that the nursery has been suspended due to concerns regarding the suitability of the directors of the company.'

Managers of the nursery have not responded to requests for comment.

However, in an email to parents they said the departure of the nursery's maintenance man had led to 'areas of upkeep and maintenance that led us to fall short of requirement', but they had employed a gardener and maintenance man to 'immediately resolve housekeeping and maintenance issues'.

The email added: 'We are confident that by the time Ofsted return in three-to-six months we will not only have met their requirements, but we will have fully improved our provision and we aim to provide a wider range of resources to the children.'
