Has Father Joined the Mustard Club?

This famous slogan was posted across London buses and in newspapers between 1926 and 1933 – the inspiration of the advertising firm Messrs S H Benson.

People were urged to join the Mustard Club, prompting intrigued consumers to ring up the bus companies and press to find out what it was all about.

In many ways it was ahead of its time and fictional characters, including Baron de Beer and Miss Di Gester, were created, with cartoons of the characters released.

But it was not the first famous advertising campaign. John Hassall is best remembered for his Klondyke posters.

These pictures are from the J & J Colman archives which are now at owner Unilever's UK base in Port Sunlight – but we've been given access to them to mark the firm's 200th anniversary.
