A pizza restaurant and takeaway’s retrospective bid to open has been given the green light despite traffic safety fears.

Mr Erden at 01 Pizza in Ingate, Beccles, applied for retrospective planning permission to East Suffolk Council for a change of use from Class E restaurant to a Sui Generis use take-away and restaurant.

Beccles Town Council raised concerns over the frequent traffic and the parking area causing a “traffic safety hazard”.

Suffolk County Council highways department also objected to the bid due to the three parking bays located at the front of the building.

In a letter, it said vehicles would be “obstructing the public footway” and therefore raised safety concerns.

As a result, the highway authority recommended that Mr Erden omits the vehicle parking spaces from the proposal and re-instates the kerbs to full height to “ensure vehicles are not able to park in the front of the building”.

But, in the delegated report, it says the “parking layout is a long-standing feature of the adopted highway” dating back to 2009 and therefore, it would be considered “unreasonable for the Local Planning Authority to insist that the applicant removes these parking spaces”.

The reports adds that the site is in a “sustainable location” on a main bus route and directly opposite a public house which also has no off-street parking.

A public comment to the application said in the summer “noise of customers and staff are audible from the gardens of the property's boarding the rear of the property”.

But the report says: “There have been no noise or odour complaints reported to the council since the premises started operating following the original grant of planning permission.”

In a post online, a spokesperson for 01 Pizza said: "We just wanted to take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers and those who shared comments of support to us in the months since we have opened.

"We are looking forward to continuing to serve the people of Beccles and the surrounding area with a busy weekend ahead."
