People in a Norfolk town have raised concerns after their tap water has been coming out either a strange colour or not at all.

Pictures on social media show a cloudy yellowish-coloured water, sometimes with an odd smell, coming from taps at North Walsham.

Some have even reported water coming out brown, while others have been left with no or low water pressure.

Comments online also reported that local businesses had been affected, with the Three Cottages Chip shop on Bacton Road unable to open due to a lack of running water.

The problems have been caused by a burst water main, which water provider Anglian Water is working to fix.

The Anglian Water website shows an interruption in supply at Bacton Road, North Walsham.

A spokeswoman for Anglian Water said: “We’re sorry some customers in North Walsham may have seen low pressures, or no water at all, yesterday.

"Yellow/brown discolouration is fairly common after a large burst, and it’s nothing for people to worry about.

"The velocity of the water when a large pipe bursts can stir up iron sediments from the pipe, which can lead to this kind of discolouration.

"Iron in the water is harmless and usually short-lived, but if we get reports of this, we’ll carry out some work on our end to get things back to normal.

"This was due to a burst water main on Bacton Road, which our teams are fixing.

"All affected customers should now be back on normal water pressures.

“In order to keep our engineers and other road users safe while we carry out the repair, we’ve had to close Bacton Road, with a full diversion in place.

"We appreciate that this might be inconvenient for local residents, particularly with other roadworks in place nearby, so we’d like to thank everyone for bearing with us while we finish this emergency work.”
