A former Canaries star and legendary manager of Great Yarmouth Town and Diss Town will be remembered at a special football match. 

Great Yarmouth Town have named their home match against Walsham-Le-Willows on Saturday, November 23, a special "Bill Punton" day.

Mr Punton is a Bloaters legend who managed the club for an incredible 21 years from 1969 to 1990 and he also had a distinguished playing career with Norwich City, Newcastle United and Sheffield United amongst others. 

Prior to kick off on Saturday there will be a special presentation made to Mr Punton, who is now 90, on the pitch by the club.

Mr Punton was a member of the Canaries' famous 1959 FA Cup semi-final side. He also scored for Norwich in the 1962 Football League Cup Final against Rochdale helping the Canaries secure their first major trophy.

At the end of his playing career, Mr Punton moved into management, spending 20 years in charge of Great Yarmouth Town.

He brought the team to the semi-final of the FA Vase in 1983.

He later became manager of Diss Town, leading them to victory in the FA Vase final in 1994.

Meanwhile, last Saturday the Bloaters made the long trip to league leaders Ely City where they came away with a point in very creditable 0-0 draw.

Great Yarmouth Town remains 9th in the Thurlow Nunn Premier League with 27 points from 15 matches and with games in hand on almost all of the teams above them.

They are also still challenging in two cup competitions after winning 10 cup ties so far this season.
