Controversial plans for a travellers' site in a tiny village are back on the agenda.

West Norfolk Council rejected proposals for 10 mobile homes and caravan pitches on land at West Dereham, near Downham Market, in March.

It came after 120 locals, backed by then South West Norfolk MP and former prime minister Liz Truss objected.

Opponents said the scheme was against the local plan, would have an adverse visual impact on the area, would lead to increased traffic, put pressure on local services, such as schools and could cause flooding.

Now fresh proposals have been submitted for the site, off Station Road, on one of the approaches to the village.

The application, by an agent named in planning papers as H Rody, says the site is not in an area of outstanding natural beauty or "ecologically sensitive".

It adds extra screening has been included to "soften the impact of the proposal on the wider landscape".

They add the site is within reach of facilities such as schools and shops at Downham Market, three miles away.

The latest application includes a drainage plan, while the statement adds the proposals would not have an adverse impact on the amenities of neighbouring properties.

The applicant says the council must find 76 pitches within the next five years.

They add: "This proposal could make a valuable contribution towards the council's deficit of gypsy and traveller pitches."

Ms Truss, who lost her seat at July's election, described the site as "deeply unsuitable for use as a travellers' site" after the original plans were turned down by planning officials under delegated powers.

A decision is expected from West Norfolk Council next year.
