A Ferris wheel on Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile will continue spinning for two more years.

At a meeting on Wednesday evening (November 13), councillors approved William Abbott's application to operate the attraction on South Beach Parade all year round until February 1, 2027.

The wheel, known locally as the ‘Yarmouth Eye’, features 36 gondolas seating up to six people each and is situated on council-owned land.

The Yarmouth EyeThe Yarmouth Eye (Image: James Weeds) Mr Abbott, who owns the company Observation Wheel UK, can now, as per the Town Hall’s development management committee's decision, continue to operate the structure on the council-owned land it sits on.

Planners believed that the wheel brings economic benefits to the town and offers a temporary tourist attraction alternative while the town undergoes other revitalization projects - such as the Winter Gardens restoration nearby.

The wheel has been on the seafront since May 2022. 

That application had faced objections from council officers who believed it was "unsightly".
