More than 70 affordable flats could be built for the over-55s next to a new medical centre.

Medcentres PLC has applied for planning permission for a block of 77 one and two-bedroom apartments next to the new St James Medical Practice in King's Lynn.

A planning statement says: "This development will help deliver affordable housing provision to an area where there is a clear and identified need, currently being unmet by local supply and where there is unprecedented demand for this housing type."

It adds the scheme will be owned and operated by Housing 21, a not-for-profit provider of retirement living and extra care for older people. It will also create up to 40 jobs

Work is already under way on more than 400 new homes to the south of the latest proposed development on what were formerly fields off Edward Benefer Way.

Plans were passed in 2018 despite strong local opposition.
