The finalists have been announced for the Start Up Business award, sponsored by LOCALiQ, at the EDP Business Awards 2024

We take a closer look at this year's finalists and discover why they stood out to the category judges.

The Bug Parc

Located in Lenwade, The Bug Parc is a unique, award-winning invertebrate zoo.

The family-friendly attraction incorporates educational but fun visitor centres showcasing hundreds of minibeasts, together with a wealth of easy-to-understand information wallboards, full of colour pictures and fun facts.

Hands-on visitor experiences allow guests to hold a variety of animals under controlled conditions, and there are multiple talks every day in the animal visitor centres.

The judges said The Bug Parc “has pushed the boundaries of what a modern zoo can be”, praising the “resilience, innovation, and leadership that have propelled it to the forefront of the industry”.

They added: “The company’s investment in people has been a core pillar of its success.”

For the Love of Norfolk

Karen Williams launched For the Love of Norfolk as a pop-up stall on Norwich Market in March 2024, taking over the stall permanently in June.

The business provides unique gifts, souvenirs and home fragrances that are not just made in but inspired by Norfolk.

Karen also sees herself as an “unofficial tourist information service”. She likes to inform visitors of Norwich’s rich history and advise them on the places they shouldn’t miss out on.

The judges said For the Love of Norfolk “has proven to be a remarkable example of resilience and creativity”, adding that the business offers items that “reflect the distinctive charm and essence of Norfolk”.

Nurture Marketing

Nurture Marketing is a Norwich agency providing a range of services including strategy, PR, websites, print marketing, social media, print marketing videography and photography.

Founded by Rechenda Smith, the company’s mission is to support the growth of East Anglian businesses by providing marketing that matters.

The judges said Nurture Marketing’s shortlisting is not only a celebration of its innovative approach but also “a reflection of the strong relationships it has built with its clients and partners”.

They added: “Being shortlisted in such a competitive category speaks volumes about the company’s commitment to excellence, creativity and nurturing the growth of local businesses.”

Startle

Startle is a contemporary art gallery offering a great platform for art lovers and collectors.

The company’s flagship gallery is located in the historic town of Holt. It is complemented by Startle’s recently opened gallery in Drove Orchards, Thornham and a website with augmented reality function, allowing customers to visualise any piece of art on their wall.

Startle collaborates with De-Montfort Fine Art, the UK’s largest fine art publisher, and also works closely with leading independent artists from across the country.

The judges said: “Through carefully curated exhibitions, personalised services and a keen eye for undiscovered talent, Startle has quickly distinguished itself as a forward-thinking force within the creative industry.”
