Fire crews had to travel by foot to put out a blaze in Sprowston last night after firework traffic made it impossible for the engine to pass.

A video has emerged of a fire engine responding to a 999 call in the area, near the Scouts' event in Tusting Close.

The traffic mayhem caused by the popularity of the fireworks display meant that many missed the event while trying to find somewhere to park.

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the chaos blocked the emergency crews.

She said: "We were called to reports of a fire in the open in Lushers Loke, Sprowston, at around 7.40pm.

"One appliance from Sprowston went to the scene but got caught in traffic, so our crew finished the journey on foot.

Some people were stuck in standstill traffic for more than an hour while trying to reach the event.

One local man said: "I'm so glad that people enjoyed the fireworks organised by the Scouts at Tustin Close.

"Hopefully next year we won’t have the situation where a fire engine is unable to attend a fire in a local property."

Local man James Lemon added: "It was absolute carnage.

"They accepted too many sales on the gate and had to shut the gates, so people with paid for tickets had to be turned away.

"The roads were gridlocked, a fire engine couldn’t get through. It was so scary."

"The organisers took the decision to stop admission to the event because they wanted to keep all those who attended safe.
