A bid to convert a former Covid 19 vaccination centre into a hot food takeaway has got a thumbs-up from planners, despite local objections.

The application is for a change of use of a community facility and shop on Lowestoft Road in Gorleston into a takeaway serving pizza and chicken, with operations running from 3pm to 11pm daily.

The plan will go before Great Yarmouth Borough Council's development management committee on Wednesday, November 13.

In a report prepared ahead of the meeting, council planners noted that steps taken by the applicant, including an odour management plan and adjustments to opening hours, should help mitigate concerns over noise, odour and potential disturbances to neighbours.

The proposal is facing 17 objections from residents, who worry that the takeaway could bring an increase in noise, antisocial behavior and parking pressures to the area.

Some locals have also raised concerns about an over-concentration of takeaways in Gorleston.

In response to concerns, the applicant amended the closing time to 11pm and provided a ventilation plan aimed at controlling odours.

In a report prepared ahead of next week's meeting, planners said that environmental health officers reviewed the plan and found it sufficient to prevent unwanted smells from affecting nearby properties.

The premises was previously a retail unit prior to 2017 when it was granted planning permission to become a private venue hire.

In the intervening period it was used as a Covid 19 vaccination centre.

Planners are recommending the committee approve the application, which marks another shift in the town's changing retail landscape.

Elsewhere in Gorleston, there are plans to convert the old Barclays bank building on the High Street into a mixed-use development of shops and flats.
