A new 70-bed care home can go ahead despite multiple objections from people living nearby and even members of another care company.

Work can now begin on the project in land adjacent to Taverham Nursery Centre, in Fir Covert Road.

The plans, submitted to South Norfolk and Broadland District Council in March 2022 by Avery Healthcare, were finally approved last week.

During the proposal objections were raised by members of the community. Some of these were members of the team at Brooklands Care Home, just down the road in Drayton.

It was flagged up that the site had not been allocated for a care home, but "for other uses such as a petrol station and pub" which were said to be "entirely appropriate" for the location.

Objectors added: "While it's clear the need for care is increasing in the coming years it's still important that any facilities are provided in the right locations.

The Greater Norwich Local Plan includes the Marriott's Park development of more than 1,500 homes, which is said to include specialist care housing. It was argued that this could already meet "any additional care needs in the immediate vicinity".

The council approved the care home plans under multiple conditions. These include making sure there's a: "Plan to protect the occupants of completed dwellings on the site and residential dwelling surrounding the site from noise, dust and smoke."

Associated car and cycle parking, landscaping and general amenity space provisions are also included in the plans.
