A man has gone on trial accused of raping a young girl on train journeys between Ely and Norwich.

Daniel Russell, 38, has been accused of two counts of rape against the girl who was under 13 at the time but cannot be named for legal reasons.

Norwich Crown Court heard the alleged offences happened in a toilet on the train between November 28, 2015, and January 20, 2021.

Norwich Crown CourtNorwich Crown Court (Image: Peter Walsh, Newsquest) Duncan O'Donnell, opening the crown's case on Monday said Russell took the girl into the toilet on the train and sexually assaulted her after showing her a pornographic video.

The prosecutor said the girl - who described Russell as a "stinky bum bum head" in a police interview - told officers he threatened to kill the foals of a horse she had seen at an animal sanctuary if she did not do what he asked.

He said she told police (Russell) "made me do it and was threatening me".

Mr O'Donnell said the trial will hear that the girl say that Russell was "always doing it in the bathroom on the train" and did it "a lot more than lots".

Mr O'Donnell said while on the train Russell, for his own sexual gratification, "assaulted her sexually and showed her indecent videos".

Following his arrest others were spoken to including the mother of the girl who had contacted the authorities after her daughter described Russell making her do troubling things.

Russell, of Tolhouse Street, Great Yarmouth, has denied two counts of rape of a child under 13.

He has also pleaded not guilty to causing a child to watch a sexual act and making indecent images of children.

The trial continues.
