Broads Authority seeking savings to avoid toll hikes

It follows warnings people may be forced to pay up to 12.5pc more to use the county's waterways, which would equate to prices rising by nearly a third in just three years.

This led to backlash from Broads groups, who said the cost hikes would impose a "significant burden" on boaters.

The BA says it will now investigate where it can reduce its operational costs in order to mitigate the impact on owners.

John Packman, chief executive of the agency, said: "The poor summer weather combined with the pressures on the cost of living have resulted in fewer boats using the Broads and a reduction in the authority’s income.

"This makes deciding next year's navigation charges even more challenging. 

"In the current economic climate and in the light of the last two years' increases of 13pc and 8.5pc, a 12.5pc increase would be deemed unacceptable to the majority of toll payers.

"Therefore, we will look to see where the authority can reduce its operational costs to mitigate the impact to boat owners."

Members will continue their Broads toll fees discussions - which must be set annually - next month.

The BA is facing a £394,000 gap in its funds next year due to rising costs and a fall in income from toll fees.

Money raised from toll fees is ringfenced to be used on maintenance work to ensure the Broads are kept navigable, as opposed to its national park duties.

The toll fee costs are determined on the basis of the size and type of craft.

Private boat owners can currently expect to pay £369 for a large motor cruiser, £225 for a large sailing craft and £145 for a houseboat. 

Hire firms also have to pay toll fees.
