A hamster that was saved from being mauled by a cat outside a pub has found her forever home in Norfolk.

A group of pub-goers spotted the one-year-old rodent being chased down a busy road by a cat outside The Shakers in Harwich.

They intervened and scooped the animal up into the safety of an empty plastic pint glass.

A member of the Blue Cross in Suffolk saw a photo of the hamster curled up in the cup on social media and agreed to take her to a rehoming centre in Wherstead.

The team checked her over and found she was very underweight but otherwise healthy.

When no owner could be traced the hamster was placed into foster care and has since found her forever home in Thetford.

Tara Schafer, foster coordinator at Blue Cross in Suffolk, said: “We’re amazed she managed to survive both the cat and the busy road.

"Thank goodness she was spotted and scooped up and taken to safety.

“She was given the name Sunflower as she was happily snacking on them on her way to our centre.

“We’re happy to report that after some time and care in one of our foster homes, we found Sunflower a loving new home safe indoors.”

Her new owner, who lives in Thetford, added: “I chose Sunflower because I loved her rescue story and thought her name was cute.

“She's getting spoiled daily with various foods and lots of love.

"She's settled well and is always happy to come to your hand chirping away when you approach the cage. That'll probably be all the food."
