The student who died at the UEA Sportspark has been named.
Mohammed Farraj, a second-year medical student in his 20s, has been confirmed by the university as the man who died during an incident yesterday evening.
His family have been informed.
The Sportspark has remained closed since the incident on Wednesday when emergency services were called to the gym at 7pm following reports of a medical emergency involving a man who had been using gym equipment.
Police said enquiries are being carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as unexplained.
The Sporkspark is due to remain closed until Saturday.
A statement sent by Kris Bowles, dean of Norwich Medical School, to students named the victim.
He said: "It is with great sadness that I have to share the heartbreaking news with you that Mohammed Farraj, one of our second-year medical students, passed away yesterday following an incident at UEA Sportspark.
"My heart goes out to his family.
"I just cannot imagine what they are going through at present.
"He had all the potential to be a great doctor, so it is with great sadness that we hear of his passing and our thoughts are with his family and friends."
Mr Farraj is the second person to have died at the Sportspark in two years.
In January 2022 Dominic Hopkins drowned while swimming at the pool at the UEA gym.
