The UEA Sportspark in Norwich will remain closed today after a man in his 20s died.
Emergency services were called at about 7pm on Wednesday to the gym following reports of a medical emergency involving a man who had been using gym equipment.
The student was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene.
The UEA Kurdish Society has shared a statement on its Instagram story stating that the victim was a member of the Kurdish community.
It is understood he was studying medicine at the university.
A statement released by the Sportspark said: "We are aware of an incident at the Sportspark this evening during which someone received emergency treatment but sadly died."
The Sportspark remains closed today and a police cordon is in place at the entrance.
A spokesman for Norfolk Constabulary said: "The area was evacuated while emergency services provided medical treatment.
"A police cordon is in place and the gym will remain closed while enquiries are carried out to establish the circumstances surrounding the death, which is being treated as unexplained."
Photos posted on social media showed a huge emergency service presence outside the gym on Wednesday evening.
