A 17-year-old accused of attempting to murder a man in a Norfolk street has insisted he was "frightened" about what the former soldier might do to him and the fellow teen he was with.
The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has gone on trial accused of the attempted murder of Danny Norman. Elvis Price, 18, is also on trial.
Norman was stabbed multiple times as he was out walking with his fiancée and two young daughters in Bury Road, Thetford, on Mother's Day this year (March 10).
The attack was partially caught by Mr Norman's partner Sophie Wheeler on her mobile phone.
Giving evidence at Norwich Crown Court on Wednesday (October 16) the teen, who was 16 at the time of the attack, said he was "frightened" about what might happen to Price.
He said he knew Mr Norman had "served in the army and was really dangerous" and was experienced at fighting.
The teen said he knew Price "can't fight" and that Mr Norman, who had served in Afghanistan during service with the Royal Anglian Regiment, "would hurt" him.
He said he ran up to and pushed Mr Norman "from behind" as he thought he was "going to kick off".
He told jurors that Mr Norman was trying to "put his fingers in my eyes" and it "hurt".
The teen said Mr Norman's hands were also on his throat during the incident which has left him with a mark on the back of his neck.
He said he "didn't see a knife" being used by Price during the incident and thought he had just been "punching him".
Peter Guest, defending, asked the teen how he felt now and he said "shocked, upset and I didn't mean for anything like this to happen".
The teen was asked whether he intended to kill or cause Mr Norman really serious harm.
He answered no to both questions.
The 17-year-old has denied attempted murder and causing GBH with intent.
Price, of Amulet Close, Thetford, has denied attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm with intent and having an article with a blade or point.
The trial continues.
