A school has closed for a week while carpets are replaced after a limescale build-up led to high levels of water.

Last week it was reported the children at Mattishall Primary School in Dereham had been using portable toilets while engineers worked to resolve the drainage issues at the school.

Although work to resolve the flooding has been resolved, the limescale build-up in the pipework beneath the building, which caused the flooding and resulted in high water levels, has affected carpets.

As a result, the carpets require replacing throughout the school and in order to do so, the school has closed until Friday, October 18 while new carpets are fitted - much to the frustration of some parents.

The children are now relying on online teaching for the rest of the week.

One parent at the school said: "I am frustrated because of the impact it has had on many of our situations.

"We're being expected to teach our children at home as the school has requested we collect home packs, but this assumes that all parents are able to take time off from work to do so."

A spokesman for Synergy Multi Academy Trust said: "The closure has been necessary for the safety and welfare of our pupils and staff, which is of paramount importance.

"Staff are working hard and continue to provide online home learning and have created work packs for parents and carers to collect for their children.

"Parents evenings, which were due to take place on the evenings of the 14 and 15 of October, have also been rescheduled to take place after half term.

"Online learning will continue throughout the week while the school remains closed, and we will continue to send updates to parents and carers during this time.

"We intend to reopen on Monday, October 21, by which time new flooring should be fitted.

"We would like to thank our pupils, staff, parents and carers for their patience and understanding."
